Water is the most adaptable force in nature. It can bend without breaking, take the shape of whatever holds it, and move around or through any obstacle in its path. It doesn’t resist change — it becomes it.
That’s what effective leadership looks like. In a time of transition, challenge, or reinvention, we must be like water — adaptable, resilient, and purpose-driven.
Real Leaders Are Grounded in the Present, and Focused on the Future
Leadership is not about perfection or predictability. It’s about being honest about where you are — so others can believe in where you’re going. People don’t need you to be perfect. They need you to be real. The vision you carry and the belief you have in that vision is what creates momentum.
Personally, I’ve rarely reached my goals in the exact way I envisioned them. But I’ve reached them nonetheless — because I stayed committed, flexible, and open to evolving paths.
Involve Your People — Especially the Newest Ones
Leadership is never a solo act. One of the most powerful things you can do is invite others into the process — especially those who are newest to the team. New people bring fresh perspectives. They aren’t weighed down by “the way it’s always been done.”
I recently asked one of our newest team members to help plan a training. He stepped up, created a whole game, and delivered something fresh and exciting. Now, he carries himself with the confidence of someone who’s been here for years — because he’s part of building something. And when people help create something, they care about it more.
Let people belong before they believe. Ownership leads to engagement.
Be Willing to Pivot — If the Juice Is Worth the Squeeze
The only reason you’re truly willing to change is if you believe the outcome is worth it. That’s why it’s important to zoom out from the tactical or “means” goals (the job title, the income, the short-term marker) and anchor into your end goals — the life you want to build, the impact you want to have, the way you want to feel.
When the “why” is big enough, the “how” becomes flexible.
Stay Humble, Stay Open
Leadership isn’t about knowing everything. It’s about being curious enough to keep learning — even from the person who just walked through the door.
Be open. Be willing. Be adaptable.
Be water, my friend.
