Melissa White Boyer didn’t plan to become a nonprofit founder or a children’s book author. But life — as it often does — had other ideas.
Melissa is a wife, mother of three, and entrepreneur with a deep passion for sales, leadership development, and purpose-driven work. She spent the last decade navigating the challenges of raising her son, who has a rare genetic disorder, and came out the other side with something rare of her own: clarity. That journey led her to co-found the Rare Genes Movement, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting families navigating rare genetic diagnoses through storytelling, advocacy tools, and awareness campaigns.
Her debut picture book I Am Rare, illustrated by Marcin Piwowarski and published by Yuni Press, was written for every child who has ever needed to see themselves in the pages of a story. It celebrates what makes rare kids extraordinary — not in spite of their differences, but because of them.
Alongside her advocacy work, Melissa has consulted on large-scale sales campaigns for major companies and mentored emerging professionals into confident leaders. She’s built a business and a nonprofit at the same time, raised a family through medical complexity, and kept going through it all. She calls it what it is: Made From Grit.
Melissa writes and speaks about leadership, resilience, rare parenting, and the courage it takes to show up fully in life’s messiest chapters. She lives in Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey, with her husband Donny and their three children.
